Jay: You’re based in New York now, but originally from Russia I understand. What was it like gelling with children in school when you first got to the city, was the language barrier difficult to deal with?
Marina: Yes I'm based outta NY right now, I was born in Uzbekistan. It was definitely a bit tough for me and my family but we were excited and fortunate to have the chance to come to America. I had to learn a whole new world. I found common ground with other kids and people in general thru music, and I learned english by listening and reading either album pamphlets or captions on the tv.
Jay: If the opportunity comes along would you ever want to bring your music international back over there?
Marina: For sure, that would be awesome. If I can touch people all over the globe with my music, thats an ultimate dream of mine.
Jay: Do we have a release date for “What’s done is done” yet?
Marina: The album is slated for early 2010, we are working for a February release.
Jay: What can we expect from the album? Any collaboration’s from other artist?
Marina: "What's done is done" is a very emotional, relationship-heavy album. I wrote tons of material, and I've also recorded songs that others wrote for me. It tells stories of love lost, love found, search of love. For now, there are no features with other artists but we shall see, we've some ideas. I cant wait, it'll be special.
Jay: I know you’re a song writer, how much will we get to experience of your own song writing on the album?
Marina: I wrote many poems and songs, I cowrote some stuff with Harve Pierre and other great writers. We got great material, its gonna be tough to choose the final songs that'll make the cut.
Jay: What would you want your fans to take from your own words? Is there a message in them?
Marina: Every song has it's own little message, every line I wrote has a meaning to me and the people I wrote about. And songs I didnt write have strong meaning to me cause I felt the things I was singing about. I guess what I'd like for them to hear is the emotion. I get emails from fans about "Sideline" and they tell me their stories, and how they can relate to every single word. Even though the song is sad, it's so beautiful to me that I can reach and evoke people's feelings and comfort them that they r not alone, that it gets better. Some of the stories have a resolve, some don't. It's really however u wanna hear it.
Jay: I saw the music video for “Sideline”…did you enjoy the video making process? Is there anything you have seen in other music videos that you may want to try to one up in the future?
Marina: I loved it! It felt so surreal, like "this is actually happening!" All these people are here working on my video. A dream come true. It turned out perfect. I always loved the scenes in videos where the singer is backed by a great band or even better an orchestra! I'd love to do that scene.
Jay: If you could pick an audience of 5 to perform in front of, who would you choose? and why. Marina: Oh no, you know I've always been more comfortable singing in front of a big crowd. And if I chose 5, then they'd be people I respect and admire so that would make it that much harder to sing in front of! But if I had to chose, it would be my Father, Harve Pierre, President Obama, David Foster and Shania Twain. My Father is the one who passed his talents and passion for music onto me, he's my biggest fan. Harve is the one who is giving me a chance to work on making my dreams come true so he must be there to witness this event he had a hand in creating. The President? well cause he's the President! always been a dream of mine to sing at the White House. David Foster is one if not my favorite composer/songwriter of all time, so that would be an honor for me. And Shania Twain is my idol, I just love her music and the way she carries herself as an artist and a woman.
Jay: Music is at a stand still with sales not being what they used to; most in the industry blame it on internet piracy. Is that what you would blame it on? Or would you say it’s due to album quality not being what it used to?
Marina: I'd say it’s definitely piracy.
Jay: Diddy is known for being very intimidating, how did you react to his personality when you first met him? Was he scary?
Marina: :) No! you know I watched the Mtv shows just like everyone else, but when I first met him and til this day I've never seen or experienced that "persona" from the shows. If anything, he exudes positivity and respect for others from what I've seen.
Jay: Why should music lovers keep an eye out for Marina Chello?
Marina: They should look out for any artist that makes music for the heart and soul, for songs that touches them. And I just happen to do exactly that :)
